View a QTI quiz file online

A QTI export is a ZIP of XML that no ordinary program opens. Drop the .zip below and read the quiz the way it looked in Canvas: numbered questions, answer choices, points, and the correct answers when you switch them on. It opens in your browser, so the file stays on your computer.

Read a QTI file in three steps

  1. 1

    Find the QTI .zip

It comes from Canvas (Settings › Export Course Content › Quiz), from a colleague, or from a publisher’s test bank. Keep it zipped: the viewer needs the imsmanifest.xml inside the ZIP, so a single loose .xml file won’t open.

  2. 2

Drop it on the box above

Or click Choose a file. Every quiz in the export is listed in the sidebar, and the first one opens straight away.

  3. 3

Read, check answers, or save a copy

Switch on Show answers to see the key and any feedback. If you want it outside the browser, export the quiz to Word (.docx) or print it to PDF as a student copy, an answer key, or both.

What a QTI file is

QTI (IMS Question and Test Interoperability) is a standard XML format for moving quizzes between learning platforms. Canvas classic quizzes export as QTI 1.2: a .zip with an imsmanifest.xml at the root and a folder per quiz holding the questions and Canvas’s own quiz settings.

Unzipped, the questions are deeply nested XML with HTML escaped inside it, which is why opening the file in a text editor or browser tab shows tags rather than a quiz. The viewer reads that XML and lays it out as a normal quiz.

Which QTI files open here

Built for Canvas: classic quiz exports (QTI 1.2 .zip) and the quizzes inside a full course .imscc. Multiple choice, true/false, multiple answers, short answer, essay, matching and numerical questions are fully supported; fill in multiple blanks and multiple dropdowns are partly supported, and any other type shows its question text with a note.

Not supported yet: Canvas New Quizzes exports, which use QTI 2.x, and QTI from other systems that doesn’t follow Canvas’s layout. Those show a clear message instead of a half-read quiz.

Questions

Can I open a QTI file without Canvas or another LMS?

Yes. The viewer reads the file itself, so you don’t need an LMS account, and it works after you’ve lost access to Canvas.

Is the file uploaded to a server?

No. The ZIP is unpacked and read in your browser tab. We only record anonymous events such as “a file was opened”, never file names or contents.

I only have a .xml file, not a .zip. Will it open?

Not on its own. The viewer needs the whole export ZIP, including imsmanifest.xml. If you unzipped it, zip the folder back up (the manifest must be at the top level) and drop that.

Does it open Canvas New Quizzes or Blackboard QTI?

Not yet. New Quizzes use QTI 2.x, and other systems arrange QTI differently. If yours won’t open, email us so we know to prioritise it; you don’t need to send the file.

Can I edit the questions?

Not in the viewer. Export the quiz to Word (.docx) and edit it there, or open the Word file with Google Docs.
