Move a Canvas course to Google Classroom

Google Classroom has no import for Canvas course exports, so the move is done item by item. Open your .imscc below, export each page, assignment or quiz as a Word file, and upload those files to Google Drive, where you can attach them to Classroom posts or open them as Google Docs.

From a Canvas export to Google Classroom

  1. 1

    Open the Canvas export here

Drop your .imscc (Canvas: Settings › Export Course Content › Course) on the box above. The sidebar lists the modules in their Canvas order, which is a good plan for your Classroom topics.

  2. 2

Export what you want to keep as Word

Select a page, assignment, discussion or quiz and click Word (.docx). For quizzes choose Student copy, Answer key, or Both. Attached files (PDFs, slides, worksheets) can be downloaded as they are from the Files list.

  3. 3

Upload to Drive and attach in Classroom

Put the files in a Google Drive folder per module. In Classroom, create a Topic for each module, then a Material or Assignment for each item and attach the file from Drive. Open a .docx with Google Docs if you want to edit it there.

Why Classroom can’t just import the .imscc

An .imscc file is an IMS Common Cartridge: a ZIP of XML and HTML that LMSs such as Moodle, Schoology and Brightspace can import. Google Classroom isn’t built around course packages and has no Common Cartridge import, so there’s no single upload that recreates a Canvas course there.

What does move cleanly is documents. Classroom posts are built around Drive files, so turning each Canvas page and assignment into a Word document (with its images embedded) gets your content into a form Classroom works with. Settings that only exist in Canvas, such as module prerequisites, rubrics and external tool links, have to be set up again or left behind.

What to do with quizzes

Canvas quizzes are stored as QTI XML inside the export, and Google Forms can’t import QTI or Word files directly. The practical route is to export each quiz as Word with Both copies: the student copy is ready to print or attach, and the answer key lists the correct choices, accepted answers and points, so rebuilding the quiz as a Google Form (Classroom’s Quiz assignment) is copy and paste rather than retyping from memory.

OpenIMSCC doesn’t create Google Forms itself yet. It only reads your file in the browser; it never connects to your Google account.

Questions

Does Google Classroom import Canvas courses?

No. Classroom has no import for Canvas exports or other Common Cartridge files. Content has to come across as files and posts, which is what this page helps with.

Do I need access to Canvas to do this?

No, only the .imscc export file. It’s read in your browser, so it works after your Canvas account is gone.

Can I convert a Canvas quiz straight into a Google Form?

Not with this tool today. Export the quiz to Word with the answer key, then build the Form from it. Google Forms has no Word or QTI import of its own.

Will images come across?

Yes. Images stored in the export are embedded in the Word files, and they stay when you open the file with Google Docs.

Is this an official Google or Instructure tool?

No. OpenIMSCC is an independent tool and isn’t affiliated with Google or Instructure (the company behind Canvas).
