Open your Canvas Free-for-Teacher course export
If you exported your courses before Canvas Free-for-Teacher closed, you have .imscc files and no Canvas account to open them with. Drop one below to read the whole course again: modules, pages, assignments, quizzes with their answers, and attached files. Nothing is uploaded.
Drop your .imscc or QTI .zip here
Canvas course exports and Canvas quiz exports
Opens in your browser. Your file is never uploaded.
Get your course back out of the export
- 1
Find your export files
Look in your Downloads folder for files ending in .imscc (course exports) or .zip (quiz exports). The names usually start with the course name and the export date.
- 2
Drop a file on the box above
The course opens in your browser with the modules in their original order. Pages show their images, and quizzes show every question with points and correct answers.
- 3
Save what you need
Export any page, assignment or quiz to Word (.docx), print it to PDF, or download the attached files. For quizzes you can choose a student copy, an answer key, or both.
Your export is your course archive
A Canvas course export is a complete copy of the course content in the IMS Common Cartridge format, packed into one file. It holds your pages, assignments, discussions, classic quizzes, question text and answers, and the files you uploaded. It doesn’t hold student submissions or grades.
Keep the original .imscc somewhere safe (cloud storage plus a second copy). Even if you only need a few documents now, the file is what you’d import into another LMS later.
Where you can take it next
Moodle, Schoology, Brightspace and Canvas itself (Settings › Import Course Content › Canvas Course Export Package) can import an .imscc file, though LMS-specific parts may not carry over. Google Classroom can’t import it, so content goes across as documents instead; see the Canvas to Google Classroom guide below.
If you just want the material on paper or in Word, export it here one item at a time. Free exports carry a one-line footer you can delete.
Questions
Do I need a Canvas account to open the export?
No. The file contains the course itself, and OpenIMSCC reads it directly in your browser.
Are my students’ grades and submissions in the file?
No. Canvas course exports contain course content, not student work or the gradebook. Those needed a separate download from Canvas.
I have a .zip, not an .imscc. Will it open?
Yes, if it’s a Canvas quiz export (QTI). Drop it in the same way and the quizzes it contains are listed. A plain ZIP of files from elsewhere won’t open as a course.
Some items are empty. Is my export broken?
Probably not. External tool (LTI) links, New Quizzes and links to other courses don’t travel inside an export. Everything that is in the file is listed in the sidebar.
Is my course uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is opened by your browser and stays on your computer. We only record anonymous events such as “a file was opened”, never names or contents.
