Move a Canvas quiz to Google Forms
There’s no import button for this: Google Forms can’t read Canvas quiz files, and this tool doesn’t create Forms either. What it does is get the whole quiz out of your Canvas export, questions, choices, correct answers and points, into a Word answer key, so building the Form is copy and paste instead of retyping.

From a Canvas quiz to a Google Forms quiz
- 1
Open the Canvas quiz export here
Drop a quiz .zip (Canvas: Settings › Export Course Content › Quiz) or a full course .imscc. The first quiz opens with answers showing, so you can check it’s the right one.
- 2
Download the answer key as Word
Answer key is preselected. Click Word (.docx), then upload the file to Google Drive and open it with Google Docs if you want it side by side with the Form.
- 3
Rebuild it in Google Forms
Create a blank Form, open Settings and turn on Make this a quiz. Paste each question and its choices (or generate them from the Doc, see below), then click Answer key on each question to mark the correct answer and set its points.
Why there’s no one-click conversion
Canvas exports classic quizzes as QTI, an XML format for moving quizzes between learning platforms. Google Forms can’t open QTI files, and its Import questions option copies questions from other Google Forms only. So the quiz has to reach Forms as text: pasted by hand, or generated from a Google Doc by a Docs-to-Forms add-on or, on Google plans that include it, Gemini’s Help me create a form.
Either way, the hard part is getting a clean, complete document of the quiz, and that’s what this page does. OpenIMSCC reads the Canvas file in your browser and never connects to your Google account. The answer key lists every correct choice, accepted answer and point value, so you can check whatever ends up in the Form against it.
How Canvas question types map to Forms
Multiple choice and true/false become Multiple choice questions. Multiple answers becomes Checkboxes. Short answer becomes Short answer, and you can enter each accepted answer from the key in the Form’s answer key. Essay becomes Paragraph, which Forms leaves for you to grade by hand.
Some types have no direct match. Matching can be rebuilt as a Multiple choice grid, numerical questions as Short answer with the exact value (Forms doesn’t grade a margin of error), and fill in multiple blanks as one Short answer question per blank. The key shows the answers for each, so you can decide how to split them.
Questions
Does this tool create the Google Form for me?
No. It reads your Canvas quiz and exports it as Word or PDF with the answer key. You build the Form from that. It never connects to your Google account.
Can Google Forms import a QTI or Word file?
Not directly. Forms’ Import questions works only from another Google Form. A Google Doc can be turned into a Form by a Docs-to-Forms add-on or by Gemini on plans that include it, so opening the Word key as a Google Doc gives those tools a clean source. Check the result against the key.
Will images in questions come across?
Images stored in the export are embedded in the Word file. In Forms, add them to a question with the image button; you can save them from the Word or Google Docs file first.
Do I need access to Canvas?
No, only the export file. It’s read in your browser, so this works after your Canvas account is gone.
Is this an official Google or Instructure tool?
No. OpenIMSCC is independent and isn’t affiliated with Google or Instructure (the company behind Canvas).
